It Seemed so Simple

Butterflies in my eyes

keep me from seeing me.

Love is a hot summer night,

turning leaves scattered

across the highway between us.

Haphazardly we have stared

into canyons glassy and brown.

Little did we know then.

Little do we know now.

I guess we were wrong, the payment’s now.

You cannot chase the sand,

cannot build a house on the wrong

riverbank. It seemed so simple,

but simple will chase us to the grave.

The power we knew escaped

our lips one dark night

I’d like to drink a beer to us,

us is gone, now it’s me

with only butterflies to see

me.
